What is a Grey Diamond?

·

Grey diamonds have boomed in popularity in recent years and make up a large portion of the engagement rings we produce. But what are grey diamonds exactly? Grey diamonds fall in to two categories - Fancy Grey Diamonds and Included / Salt and Pepper Grey Diamonds.

FANCY GREY DIAMOND:
Natural Fancy Grey diamonds are extremely rare and can have high clarity (absence of imperfections/inclusions). The colours vary in intensity and they come in the following intensity levels: Faint Grey, Very Light Grey, Light Grey, Fancy Light Grey, Fancy Grey and Fancy Dark Grey. Most of the fancy grey coloured diamonds get their colour due to high concentration of hydrogen (or occasionally boron). Like traditional diamonds high clarity is sought after and fancy grey diamonds are graded on the same scale, VVS being the highest quality.

INCLUDED/ SALT & PEPPER DIAMONDS:

‘Included Grey’, ‘Salt and Pepper’, ‘Rustic’ and ‘Raw’ are just some of the names you may have heard when people talk about these diamonds. Diamonds are formed deep within the earth, under extreme heat and pressure so virtually all diamonds (apart from Flawless and Internally Flawless) have small ‘birthmarks’ called imperfections or inclusions.  Inclusions come in all colours, shapes and sizes and these are what affects the diamond’s ‘clarity’. So the name Salt and Pepper Diamond refers to diamonds with a high presence of  Salt = White inclusions and Pepper = Black Inclusions visibly flecked. These beautiful imperfections give the diamonds an interesting and unique look and no two diamonds will have the same pattern of inclusions so they are totally unique.

We love the visible imperfections of the diamonds as they create a beautiful haze of light to dark greys which show off the gorgeous natural state of the stone.

As they are less rare than high clarity stones they are also more affordable than the traditional white diamonds so you can get bigger stones for your budget but with the durability of a diamond you need for an engagement ring.

The colours vary can be stormy, hazy or even creamy and are beautiful alternatives to the classic white diamond. They can be speckled with a mix of translucency or they can be more opaque solid colours.

We love to mix white and grey together and balance the tones so the darkness or lightness of the diamond can be more or less pronounced. Surrounding it with white diamonds really allows for the grey to stand out and become the focal point in the pieces.
