Did you know that yellow diamonds only account for 0.001% of all mined diamond carats? This rare coloured diamond is beautiful choice for anyone seeking an alternative to the traditional white diamond engagement ring without wanting to compromise on sparkle.

HOW ARE YELLOW DIAMONDS CREATED?

When yellow diamonds are created deep beneath the earth's crust, it is the high levels of Nitrogen that create their incredible colour. This, along with their rarity and individuality, is what makes them so desirable.

HOW ARE THEY GRADED?

Yellow diamonds, as with other coloured diamonds, are graded on their own Fancy Diamond colour scale created by GIA (Gemological Institute of America). This covers everything from the palest sandy yellows to vibrant, buttercup tones.

You can find GIA's reference charts here along with a range of coloured diamonds.

WHICH CUTS WORK WELL AS YELLOW DIAMONDS?

We have a soft spot for Radiant Cut yellow diamond engagement rings, pictured below. With the many facets and sparkle of a brilliant cut diamond, but overall shape of a geometric Emerald Cut, they are the best of both worlds.

If your partner has already hinted at a yellow diamond engagement ring, they may be more inclined to go for an unusual cut of stone too. Radiant, Cushion and Emerald Cut yellow diamonds would work well as they have so much personality.

HOW DO THEY COMPARE IN PRICE TO WHITE DIAMONDS?

As Fancy Yellow diamonds are more rare than their white diamond counterparts, they tend to be more expensive. The deeper the colour, the rarer the stone, and this impacts the cost too. Despite this, yellow diamonds are the most affordable and popular of the fancy coloured diamond family.

When choosing a yellow diamond, there are also pale yellow options available on the white diamond colour scale. On our GIA 4 C's chart here you will see that between the colours N-Z the colour of white diamonds moves more towards yellow. These can be a beautiful alternative if you're looking for a pop of colour at a comparatively lower cost than a Fancy Yellow diamond.
